Spilnota Detector Media
Detector Media collects and documents real-time chronicles of the Kremlin disinformation about the Russian invasion. Ukraine for decades has been suffering from Kremlin disinformation. Here we document all narratives, messages, and tactics, which Russia is using from February 17th, 2022. Reminder: the increasing of shelling and fighting by militants happened on the 17th of February 2022 on the territory of Ukraine. Russian propaganda blames Ukraine for these actions.

On 23 November, on the 1003th day of the full-scale war, our editorial office recorded:

Manipulation Ukrainians will be avoided like the "plague" because of the policies of the President's Office and "patriots" who think the whole world owes them

This thesis is spread by anonymous Telegram channels controlled by the FSB. For example, propagandists cite billionaire Elon Musk's refusal to pay for Starlink services in Ukraine, allegedly because he was offended by the words of Ambassador Andrii Melnyk, who advised him to "go to hell."

Detector Media found out whether it is true that Elon Musk refused to pay for Starlink services in Ukraine because of an insult to Ukrainians. According to CNN, the letter to the Pentagon with a notification about the refusal of Starlink funding was sent in September. So, it was before the appearance of Elon Musk's proposals regarding the "peace plan" of the Russian-Ukrainian war, which he published on Twitter on October 3, and before the harsh reaction of Ukrainians to his advice.

In this way, propagandists try to show that Ukrainians are ungrateful, so it isn't worth helping them.

Fake The German TV channel ZDF showed a map of Ukraine without territories annexed by Russia

Russian media and some users on the Internet spread the news that the German state TV channel ZDF used a new map of Ukraine in its news broadcast — without the territories annexed by Russia. The plot was allegedly devoted to the disconnection of water and electricity. Behind the presenter was a screen with a new map - without Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, Luhansk regions, Crimea, writes Stop Fake.

However, the shared image was edited because a map of Ukraine was deliberately added to the background without the territories of Ukraine annexed and temporarily occupied by Russia, the ZDF channel reported on its Twitter page. The message says that the photo shared on the network is an edited frame from the Heute Journal news program from October 10, and the plot is related to the investigation of sabotage at gas stations. ZDF also assured: they have never used such a "map" of Ukraine.

Russian propagandists used this fake to confirm the alleged "recognition" by the German state TV channel of the annexed territories being part of Russia. Thus, they want to show that the international community accepts the "new reality" and is gradually putting up with Russia's occupation of parts of Ukraine. It is not the first case of editing screenshots from the TV screen. Thus, propagandists distort reality by inventing facts that don't exist to support their messages.

Fake In Kyiv, pensioners fight for scarce sugar

A video of a shoving match in a supermarket with the participation of dozens of elderly people is circulating on pro-Russian Telegram channels. This video was allegedly filmed recently in Kyiv.

As fact-checkers of the Center for Strategic Communications and Information Security found out, Russian propagandists deliberately indicated in the message about the people of Kyiv, even though they are residents of the Russian Omsk. This video is already five years old; in May 2017, a supermarket in Omsk set a promotional discount on sugar (minus three rubles per kilogram), which caused quite a stir among buyers. The video, made in the store, gained hundreds of thousands of views, and local TV channels even made stories about it. In March, the situation repeated itself in many Russian cities. However, it was not the discounts that provoked it but the full-scale invasion of Ukraine and the spread of rumors about the future deficit. Russian propagandists regularly turn to the food crisis in Ukraine to intimidate and sow panic among Ukrainians, as well as to show how bad things are in Ukraine. On October 10, when the Russians bombarded the center of Kyiv with missiles, they spread the word that stores in Kyiv seemed to be running out of products.

Disclosure Fraudsters send messages in messengers with job offers at Amazon and AliExpress

Scammers pose as hiring managers at one of the companies, Amazon or AliExpress. They look for new online part-time workers, offering work-from-home jobs, simple tasks that can be done anytime, anywhere, and high wages, a fee that seems to be paid on the same day. In the case of Amazon, they promise from 5 to 30 thousand hryvnias per day. "Salary" in AliExpress is slightly lower - from one to eight thousand hryvnias per day. Then the contacts for communication through the messenger are specified, and the link opens a chat allegedly with the manager. Ukrainian and foreign numbers, particularly Angola and the USA, are used for mailing.

We remind you that large international companies don't send job offers in personal messages en masse and don't offer to contact a recruiter through a third-party link.

Previously, fraudsters used the state program "eDopomoga" as a cover and offered to receive seven thousand hryvnias in compensation. Fraudsters also offered Ukrainians to receive seven thousand hryvnias from confiscated assets of Russia and promised payments of 3,500 hryvnias due to Russian aggression.

Message The supply of air defense systems to Ukraine continues the war

The Russian media write about this concerning the press secretary of the President of Russia, Dmytro Peskov. The aid allegedly won't change the goals of the so-called "special operation" and its final result but will only prolong the "conflict" and make it more painful for Ukrainians.

Propagandists have been spreading this message periodically since the beginning of the great war after reports of new weapons supplies to Ukraine. In this way, they are trying to discredit the supply of air defense systems for the protection of the civilian population of Ukraine, which the Western partners reported after the massive missile attacks on October 10-11. As the Center for Combating Disinformation writes, the supply of air defense systems will nullify one of Russia's biggest trump cards — missile attacks.

Previously propagandists wrote that the Ukrainian military refuses to use "Bayraktary" to discredit Western weapons. Supposedly, Ukraine will no longer receive American HIMARS MLRS and their missiles. France is complicit in "crimes" against the civilian population, as Ukraine fires at Donbas from French self-propelled guns, "Caesar," etc.

Message Ukrainian government provokes Russia into war.

Pro-Russian Telegram channels spread this information. Volodymyr Zelenskyy allegedly signed an application for accelerated accession to NATO, "calls" for a nuclear attack on Russia and thereby "gives Russia an excuse" for aggression. Instead, it is alleged that NATO again "makes it clear" to Ukrainians that Ukraine isn't a member of NATO and, therefore, won't support Ukraine. The Ukrainian authorities supposedly understand that they are "playing with fire," but they allegedly "don't care" about the results of such "games."

In fact, pro-Russian propagandists began pushing this message again after the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe passed a resolution calling Russia a terrorist regime. The amendment was also included in the resolution calling for air defense systems to be provided to Ukraine.

After Russia's massive missile attacks on Ukraine on October 10-11, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced that strengthening Ukraine's air defense would be NATO's top priority. Other Western partners also reported new arms deliveries to Ukraine.

By spreading such messages, Russian propagandists are trying to justify the war crimes of the Russian army and promote the narrative that Russia is alleged "only defending itself" or that "the West is provoking Russia to war in Ukraine."
