Spilnota Detector Media
Detector Media collects and documents real-time chronicles of the Kremlin disinformation about the Russian invasion. Ukraine for decades has been suffering from Kremlin disinformation. Here we document all narratives, messages, and tactics, which Russia is using from February 17th, 2022. Reminder: the increasing of shelling and fighting by militants happened on the 17th of February 2022 on the territory of Ukraine. Russian propaganda blames Ukraine for these actions.

On 19 May, on the 815th day of the full-scale war, our editorial office recorded:

Fake Russia has published "evidence" of Ukraine's preparation of a "dirty bomb"

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia published photos on Twitter, which allegedly prove Ukraine's preparation of a "dirty bomb." They show transparent packages of radioactive material with the inscription "radioactive." It is a fake. The Slovenian government on Twitter denied the information from the Russian Foreign Ministry. These plastic bags' photos belong to the Slovenian Radioactive Waste Agency (ARAO). The warning label on the package is also in Slovenian. The photo was taken in 2010.

According to the Slovenian agency, this image was used as an illustration in specialist lectures and information materials that were available to the general public.

Slovenia has emphasized at the official level that the radioactive waste is stored safely, is under control, and hasn't been used to make "dirty bombs."

Message Ukrainian refugees aren't waiting "at home"

Pro-Russian Telegram channels write that Vice Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk allegedly said this. In fact, the propagandists distorted the words of Iryna Vereshchuk addressed to the refugees. She asked Ukrainians to stay abroad until spring. Vereshchuk voiced such a request regarding the destruction of critical infrastructure due to Russian missile strikes and increased load on the power system due to the heating season. Propagandists manipulate the fact that Vereshchuk's words allegedly contradict Volodymyr Zelenskyy's message about restoring infrastructure. The messages also add the theses that European countries have already been "quite exhausted" because of the aid to Ukraine, the accommodation of refugees, and the financial crisis. These messages add to enhance the effect of manipulation. So, the West is primarily thinking about dealing with its problems, not Ukraine.

Manipulation The UN "proved its commitment" while investigating crimes in Ukraine

The Russian media report it concerning the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova. The report of the Commission of the UN Human Rights Council, dedicated to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, "confirms Russia's assessment of the political involvement and lack of independence of this UN mechanism. Zakharova also noted that "experts didn't even try to give the document's objectivity and balance." It isn't true.

Russia manipulates explicitly the data of the October report of the UN Commission, which provides the results of investigations into the events in Kyiv, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, and Sumy regions in February-March 2022. At first, the Russian media wrote that the UN supposedly "finally recognized Ukraine's war crimes." A few days after the release of the report, Russia changed its rhetoric and accused the Organization of "bias," "involvement," and "lack of independence." As StopFake writes, the report was compiled by a group of independent investigators from different countries. The Commission reported that they adhered to the principles of independence, impartiality, objectivity, and conscientiousness in their work. Moreover, it is separately emphasized that the Commission considered allegations of violations of the alleged responsible person or entity regardless of the person or nationality. So, the investigators did not demonstrate any "bias."

After conducting interviews with the victims, the investigation methodology emphasizes that the Commission verified information from primary and secondary sources. Such sources were the materials of various government bodies from many countries, UN funds and programs, civil society organizations, and the media. The Commission also emphasized that it interacts with the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court and other international and national subjects in every possible way. This investigation is collective and can't be considered "one-sided," as the Kremlin claims. Ukraine provided all the necessary data to the Commission's requests, but Russia ignored the UN's calls for cooperation. That is why the Kremlin's claims about the report's "political involvement" are misinformed because Russia, not the UN Commission, refused to take any part in the investigation.

Fake Chicken eggs became more expensive because all grain was taken abroad

Russian media and netizens spread information that the rise in prices for chicken eggs is allegedly caused by a lack of feed in poultry farms. After the partial blockade of three ports, Ukraine allegedly "exported all the grain to Europe." It is not so. According to the Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine, prices on the fodder market this season remain pretty low.

Moreover, the main components of chicken feed have become significantly cheaper than last year. Currently, there is a grain surplus in Ukraine due to the seaports of Ukraine previously blocked by Russia. Indeed, according to the Antimonopoly Committee of October 20, 2022, the price of eggs increased by half. According to StopFake, the main factors that will cause the increase in egg prices are: seasonality, the number of birds, an increase in the cost of feed, energy, labor, veterinary drugs, and other expenses. Also, the industrial production of eggs decreased by 25-30% due to the occupation of part of the territories of Ukraine. The Antimonopoly Committee investigates the reasons for such a significant price jump now.

Disclosure Russia spreads messages about air alerts in Ukraine in Telegram channels to emphasize its own "power"

The publication Texty.org.ua drew attention to the change in the behavior of the Telegram channels of the leading Russian media. As the author of the study notes, until October 10, the largest number of reports about an air strike in Ukraine in Russian news was on February 24, the day of the start of a full-scale invasion. At that time, the most extensive media wrote that an air alert was announced in Kyiv, and Ukrainians were asked to take shelter. An airstrike in Israel at the end of July attracted more attention from Russian media than the daily sounds of sirens in Ukrainian cities caused by Russia. Until October 10, the Russian media didn't consider it an informational excuse. Since October 10, the Telegram channels of the five largest Russian media have been writing about almost all air alarms to enhance the effect, especially writing about each area in a separate message. In this way, the Russians are probably trying to emphasize their "greatness and power." Otherwise, in this way, they try to support the emotional mood of the Russians, who were greatly comforted by the missile attack. Reports of air strikes are also mixed with reports of power outages resulting from Russia's damage to 30% of Ukraine's power plants. A separate post is dedicated to each region, sometimes without specifying that it's about Ukraine. In this way, Russia uses an old tactic of creating the illusion that Ukraine is still, to some extent, "part of Russia."

Fake German satirical magazine published a cover with a caricature of Volodymyr Zelenskyy

In social networks, the allegedly October cover of the German satirical magazine "Titanic" with a caricature of the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and the inscription "eternal appetite" is being circulated. It is a fake. Such a magazine cover doesn't exist. Titanic magazine editor-in-chief Julia Matheus confirmed to Reuters fact-checkers that the pictured cover isn't the official Titanic cover. It is also not available on the publication's website. The actual October 2022 cover features King Charles III of Great Britain with the text: "Colonial Crimes: How Germany Suffered Under the British Crown." The magazine was published on September 30. It isn't the first satirical magazine whose cover was used to create fakes about Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Previously, several fake covers of the French cartoon magazine "Charlie Hebdo" and the cover of the Spanish satirical magazine "El Jueves" were also distributed.

Message Volodymyr Zelenskyy uses the same methods as Osama bin Laden

During October, propagandists promoted messages that Kyiv was allegedly preparing to use a "dirty bomb." Western partners regarded these messages as "unsuccessful blackmail and provocation." As the Center for Combating Disinformation writes, the Russians began to compare Zelenskyy with Osama bin Laden after not getting the desired result of their fake. He allegedly plans to use weapons of mass destruction against himself and his people. Russia again hasn't provided any evidence of preparation for the so-called "dirty bomb" in Ukraine.

Message Ukraine needs to be "de-satanized" and "de-shaitanized"

They came up with a new goal for the so-called "special operation" in Russia. The "Kyiv regime" allegedly turned Ukraine into a "totalitarian hypersect" that professes "neo-paganism" as the basis of "radical nationalism." The assistant secretary of the Russian Security Council of the UN, Oleksiy Pavlov, also believes that the number of "satanic sects" in Ukraine is unknown. Still, the count "definitely runs into the hundreds." Instead, Ramzan Kadyrov announced the goal of "de-shaitanizing" Ukraine. According to the Constitution of Ukraine, every citizen of Ukraine has the right to freedom of worldview and religion. Ukrainians can practice any religion or not, participate freely in religious cults and ritual rites, and conduct religious activities. This right is limited by law only if religious beliefs affect the protection of the population's public order, health, and morals or the protection of the rights and freedoms of other people. The church and religious organizations in Ukraine are separated from the state. Therefore, the Ukrainian authorities cannot influence the religious views of Ukrainians in any way.

According to the network of religious organizations report, as of January 1, 2021, several pagan currents were registered in Ukraine. These are 161 organizations, only 0.4% of the total number of religious organizations. Some researchers of religious currents consider Satanists to be a religious group of neo-pagan native believers, but it is only one of the scientific approaches. Primarily paganism and neo-paganism in Ukraine are associated with the return of people to ancient Slavic beliefs, which existed even in the days of Kyivan Rus and had nothing to do with the cult of Satan. Moreover, pagans considered themselves a light cult and were forbidden to perform dark rituals. Oleksiy Pavlov's references to religious beliefs, totalitarianism, and radical nationalism are an unsuccessful attempt to equate Ukraine with Nazi Germany.
