Fake The USA said that many countries had given all their weapons to Ukraine

The Russian media spread fake information that the permanent representative of the US to NATO, Julian Smith, allegedly stated that there were difficulties in providing military aid to Ukraine because many countries had already allegedly "given almost everything they had."

Fake OCU has canonized Stepan Bandera

Russian mass media and pro-Kremlin Telegram channels spread a fake about the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, which allegedly canonized the head of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, Stepan Bandera. Along with this information, a "document" is also being distributed. It is said that the decision on the "canonization of Bandera" was supposedly made at the Bishops' Council of the OCU on June 20. With this fake, Russian propaganda again tries to discredit the OCU and fuel the narrative about "Nazism in Ukraine."

Fake The Prime Minister of Hungary said that he was not concerned about the situation in Ukraine

The fake about the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, who allegedly said that he "does not care about the situation in Ukraine, because he is Hungarian," is being spread to foreign audiences.

Fake Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton calls on the US to give Ukraine part of its nuclear arsenal

In the Russian segment of social networks, a photo was shared with a quote from Hillary Clinton that negotiations between Ukraine and Russia are impossible until Russia is defeated and that "the United States should transfer part of its nuclear arsenal to Ukraine because there is a war in Ukraine, they say "all or nothing." Later, the same photo of Clinton appeared with a slightly different caption: "As it turned out, [Clinton] explained to the whole world that Russia is not at war with Ukraine, but with the United States." However, all these quotes are fake. As researched by Georgian fact-checkers from Myth Detector, there is no information in any open source that the Former US Secretary of State called on the USA to hand over part of its nuclear arsenal to Ukraine. Regarding Clinton's position about negotiations with Russia, in an interview with Radio France on June 11, she stated that she agrees with the position of the Ukrainians regarding the resolution of the conflict as a result of the defeat of Putin and the complete withdrawal of Russian troops from the territory of Ukraine.

Manipulation Ukraine is threatened with a military coup

This manipulative thesis was spread on the Russian military-propaganda TV channel "Zvezda," namely: the program "Glavnoe with Olga Belova" came out with this "theme." The program repeats several fakes and manipulations, in particular, regarding the split between the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Valeriy Zaluzhny; also about Zelensky's surrender of "western Ukraine" to Poland and riots of units in the Armed Forces and requests of captured servicemen of the Armed Forces not to return them to their homeland. The plot also contains fakes about the mandatory mobilization of women in Ukraine to "replenish the ranks of the Armed Forces due to combat losses" and manipulations on the topic of Zelensky signing a decree on sending territorial defense fighters to the front. Propagandists are convinced that both ideas "are not supported by Ukrainian civilians and the military." Most of these manipulations and fakes have already been refuted by "Media Detector."

Message The West is powerless in front of the alliance of Russia and China

Russian propaganda spreads an article by the Chinese political scientist Minxin Pei, talking about the "powerlessness" of the West in front of the "union of Russia and China." In this way, Russia tries to create the impression that it has strong support in the international arena.

However, it is fake. According to the Anti-Disinformation Center, Minxin Pei's op-ed piece published by Bloomberg does say that China and Russia maintain a "strategic unity" that is a geopolitical challenge to the West. He also notes that China and Russia share "similar nationalistic values and deep antipathy to the West." However, in the material, the author does not mention the "powerlessness" of Western countries before the union of Russia and China. In other publications, the author believes that Putin wants to involve China in a military conflict. However, China is trying to support Russia without directly participating in the war and crossing the "red lines" of the United States.

According to Minxin Pei, China is in a difficult situation due to the statement on the strategic partnership with Russia signed on February 4, 2022. At the same time, Russian propaganda uses an exclusively beneficial part of the Chinese political scientist's statements to form the image of China as its reliable partner, rejecting part of the statements about China's efforts to maintain neutrality.

Manipulation In Mariupol, universities and colleges are resuming work

Russian propaganda promotes the manipulative thesis through social networks that some universities and colleges in Mariupol are resuming work and preparing for the admissions campaign. In particular, various reports refer to three educational institutions - Mariupol State University, Pryazovskyi State Technical University, and the College of Pryazovskyi Technical University. These messages are mainly distributed through telegram channels created in the occupied territories. Read more about the work of "occupation telegram channels" here.

Manipulation The West is preparing for a long war, and for Ukraine, the situation is reaching a dead end

This thesis, referring to an article in The Washington Post, is spread by pro-Russian Telegram channels and media. In fact, it is manipulation. On June 17, The Washington Post published an article titled "With limited options in Ukraine, the US and allies are preparing for a protracted war." The authors of the article wrote that "the US and its allies are preparing for a long war in Ukraine, although the Biden Administration is trying to prevent Putin from winning by sending military aid to Ukraine while trying to reduce the impact of this war on world hunger and the global economy." . Therefore, in terms of "preparation for a long-term conflict," according to the context of the article, it is more about preparing a plan in case of one of the possible variants of the development of events. Furthermore, this is quite logical from the view of responsible state leadership. However, it is the context that Russian propaganda leaves out of the discussion.

The same applies to the "dead-end for Ukraine" issue. The article does include the following sentence: "But analysts say that despite the surge in foreign aid and the strong morale of Ukrainian troops, Kyiv and its supporters can hope for little more than a stalemate with Russia's much larger, better-armed army." And again Russian propaganda took the sentence out of context. In this case, we are talking about the battles in Donbas essentially in "real-time." That is, the assumptions of experts relate to the state of affairs on the part of the front at a certain point in time and do not generalize the opinion about the war as such. Also, the events in Donbas are compared with the Ukrainian army's successes in the Kyiv battle. So, it is generally about certain successful actions of both warring parties.

Fake CNN showed the staging of a missile attack on Lviv

On Twitter, a fake was spread to the English-speaking audience that the video of the CNN channel about the Russian airstrike on fuel warehouses in Lviv on March 26, 2022, is an alleged production, saying that the footage was taken during a fire in Edmonton, Canada. In particular, in these posts, it was noted that firefighters have Edmonton written on their uniforms. It is not the first time that CNN has been criticized for allegedly staging stories about the war in Ukraine; in particular, earlier Russian propaganda accused the channel of "a production about Russian soldiers who shoot two civilian men in the Kyiv region."

In fact, the Russian Ministry of Defense publicly admitted that it launched a missile attack on Lviv that day. This fact alone refutes the report about CNN's alleged delivery of an attack on fuel warehouses in Lviv. However, this fake was analyzed in detail by the fact-checkers of the Poynter project, who studied the geolocation on the CNN video and found Lviv streets from the video on Google Maps. They also confirmed that the Ukrainian rescuers' uniforms had Edmonton written on them. "The real story is that these jackets were given to Ukrainian firefighters by Edmonton firefighters - the non-profit organization Firefighter Aid Ukraine. Edmonton's fire chief also posted a message confirming that the jacket was donated from their stock," the fact-checkers said.
