Spilnota Detector Media
Detector Media collects and documents real-time chronicles of the Kremlin disinformation about the Russian invasion. Ukraine for decades has been suffering from Kremlin disinformation. Here we document all narratives, messages, and tactics, which Russia is using from February 17th, 2022. Reminder: the increasing of shelling and fighting by militants happened on the 17th of February 2022 on the territory of Ukraine. Russian propaganda blames Ukraine for these actions.

On 15 November, on the 995th day of the full-scale war, our editorial office recorded:

Manipulation In the video message of Volodymyr Zelenskyi, the chevron of the SS Galicia division was noticed

Anonymous telegram channels broadcasting pro-Kremlin rhetoric distributed a screenshot of Zelenskyi’s video message, which allegedly shows the chevron of the Nazi 14th Waffen-SS division “Galicia” in the form of a lion with three crowns. Russian propaganda allegedly noticed it on a board with military chevrons behind the back of the President of Ukraine. This is manipulation.

The fact-checkers of the VoxCheck project drew attention to the case. A board with military chevrons really hangs behind Volodymyr Zelenskyi's back. However, the chevron that Russian propagandists passed off as the emblem of the SS division “Galicia” actually belongs to the 1st separate tank Siversk brigade, and it depicts a horse in armor. For the fake, Russian propaganda used a video message from the President dated June 20.

Russian propagandists are systematically spreading the narrative that Ukrainians, and President Zelenskyi in particular, are Nazis. Russian propaganda transfers responsibility for Russia's crimes from the aggressor to the victim of aggression. Earlier, Detector Media denied fakes that Zelenskyi wore a sweater with Nazi symbols to a meeting with the Pope, and Valerii Zaluzhnyi allegedly has a “bracelet with a swastika”.

Fake A cover with Zelenskyi and the deceased passenger of the Titan submarine was published by Charlie Hebdo, a satirical newspaper

Anonymous telegram channels broadcasting pro-Kremlin rhetoric are circulating the alleged cover of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo with a caricature of Zelenskyi. In the image, the President of Ukraine is holding the deceased passenger of the Titan submarine so that he would transfer money to help Ukraine. It's fake.

The fact-checkers of the Center for Countering Disinformation drew attention to the case. They determined that no such cover exists. The latest issue is number 1613 and it came out on June 21, while the fake cover is numbered 1614 and dated June 23.

Thus, Russian propagandists are trying to discredit Western partners and convince Ukrainians that Zelenskyi is neglected in the West. To do this, Russian propaganda uses the tactic of ridicule. Earlier, Detector Media refuted the fake that the German magazine Handelsblatt depicted a destroyed Leopard tank on its cover.

Fake Kyiv agreed with UNESCO on the transfer of holy relics to the museums of Italy, France, Germany and the Vatican

In the Russian and Georgian segment of Facebook and in the media broadcasting pro-Kremlin rhetoric, they disseminate information with reference to the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service that Kyiv allegedly agreed with UNESCO to transfer the Orthodox relics of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra to museums in Italy, France and France as if the holy relics had to be taken out in order to preserve them. It's fake.

The fact-checkers of the Myth Detector project drew attention to the case. They established that the information about the removal of holy relics from the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra to European countries is false. The Minister of Culture of Ukraine Oleksandr Tkachenko wrote on his Facebook page that “not a single sacred value will leave the territory of Ukraine”.  Also, the acting director of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, Maksym Ostapenko, noted that “the reserve did not have such plans and will not have them”. Information about this agreement cannot be found on the official website of UNESCO. This fake was denied on the official Facebook pages of the Ministry of Culture and the National Commission of Ukraine for UNESCO.

By spreading information that Kyiv has agreed to transfer relics to European countries, propagandists are trying to discredit UNESCO and the Ukrainian authorities. Russian propaganda created a fake to sow religious discord, as well as divert attention from the crimes committed by Russia, in particular, from the looting of museums and galleries. Earlier, Detector Media talked about the message that allegedly Russia does not destroy Ukrainian cultural and historical heritage.

Сonspiracy theories How conspiracy theorists explain events in Ukraine and the world: Illuminati

In the previous texts of this section, we talked about different types of “world government” according to conspiracy theorists. The Illuminati differ from them in that they have a true history, since this group actually existed. It was created in 1776 in Bavaria (Germany) as a secret society that professed the ideas of the Enlightenment. In particular, a triangle with an eye in it on dollars is a symbol created specifically by the Illuminati. However, the group was subsequently exposed and decided to officially dissolve itself, as it wanted to operate underground.

Conspiracy theorists, on the other hand, point out that the Illuminati supposedly actually exist and rule our world right now. The membership of US presidents in the circle of the Illuminati is already a cliché of Western pop culture. This group differs from others in almost nothing except that, according to the adherents of this theory, the Illuminati represent world signs of their existence. Here we are talking about music videos, and about the already mentioned dollars. Also, according to conspiracy theorists, the Illuminati “promote” or “destroy” celebrities and politicians, depending on their affiliation with them. They believe that the electoral process in any country is a fiction, since it is the Illuminati who elect politicians.

Russian propagandists use this theory primarily to justify Russian aggression against Ukraine. Like, Russia is fighting against world elites who want to destroy all intercultural differences and control the consciousness of society. Of course, one cannot do without attributing Joe Biden to the Illuminati cohort and calling the war a provocation or an Illuminati plan. In this sense, the theory of the Illuminati intersects with those that we talked about earlier.

Fake IAEA denied Budanov’s statement that Russian troops mined ZNPP

In the Russian segment of Facebook and in the media broadcasting pro-Kremlin rhetoric, information is being disseminated that the IAEA allegedly refuted the statement by the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Kyryl Budanov, about mining by the Russian military at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. It's fake.

As fact-checkers of the Stop Fake project note, the IAEA press service published a press release on the official website and confirmed the mining. The press release says that the station is mined around the perimeter and in some places inside. Therefore, the claims of Russian propaganda are false. The only thing that the IAEA does not confirm is the report of mines planted near the cooling pond. The visit of IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi took place on June 15.

Thus, Russian propaganda wants to shift the responsibility for the crimes to the victim and convince the whole world that Ukraine is creating provocations at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. Earlier, Detector Media denied the fake that Kyiv disrupted the IAEA mission to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

Manipulation Ukrainian refugee destroyed a monument to the Polish military who fought against Nazism

Anonymous telegram channels that broadcast pro-Kremlin rhetoric as well as the Polish segment of Twitter distribute a photo of the destroyed monument with the caption that a Ukrainian destroyed it because of Soviet symbols. The obelisk itself was erected in honor of the Polish partisans who fought against Nazism. This is manipulation.

The fact-checkers of the VoxVheck project drew attention to the case. They established that the monument was demolished on the basis of the decision of the Pomeranian governor Dariusz Drelich dated November 7, 2022. For the first time, the Polish publication Wizjalokalna.pl wrote about this and attached a document of the decision. The obelisk was erected at the site of the battle between Polish and Soviet partisans and German troops. The monument was demolished on the basis of the law “On the prohibition of propaganda of communism or another totalitarian system through the names of public buildings, structures and equipment” of 2017. The Institute of National Remembrance found that the obelisk symbolized the memory of communist partisans who were not part of the general Armed Forces of Poland, but were under Soviet command.

Thus, Russian propagandists are trying to sow discord between Ukraine and Poland, to present Ukrainian refugees as criminals. And thus reduce support for Ukraine. Earlier, Detector Media refuted the fake that the crime rate in Poland increased because of the Ukrainians.
