Spilnota Detector Media
Detector Media collects and documents real-time chronicles of the Kremlin disinformation about the Russian invasion. Ukraine for decades has been suffering from Kremlin disinformation. Here we document all narratives, messages, and tactics, which Russia is using from February 17th, 2022. Reminder: the increasing of shelling and fighting by militants happened on the 17th of February 2022 on the territory of Ukraine. Russian propaganda blames Ukraine for these actions.

Fake A Brazilian volunteer was beaten in the Ukrainian army as he tried to escape from the position

Such a message was circulated on social networks, in particular on telegram channels broadcasting pro-Kremlin rhetoric. The reports say that the military of the 128th brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine beat a man with his hands tied with a stick on his back. Like, it was a Brazilian volunteer who tried to escape from the position. A bound man in military uniform asked in Portuguese “not to beat him”. As proof, the authors add a video showing the process of beating an allegedly Brazilian volunteer with the participation of the Ukrainian military. At the same time, the authors of the messages note that the video was found on the phone of one of the prisoners of war of the Ukrainian military. It is not true.

The fact-checkers of the StopFake project drew attention to the case, and they investigated that the video was not real. As analysts explain, this is another production of Russian propaganda because the Brazilians are indeed among the volunteers but do not serve in the 128th brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Like other volunteers from other countries, the Brazilians serve only in the Foreign Legion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

In addition, StopFake analysts checked the video using language detection tools. That's how they figured out that the bound man in the video was speaking Portuguese. In Brazil, the official language is Portuguese. However, later the fact-checkers turned to Brazilian colleagues to clarify whether it was possible to determine from the pronunciation of the man in the video that he was Brazilian. They were told that the man was definitely not a native speaker and that he was studying European Portuguese, not Brazilian Portuguese. Actually, European Portuguese is spoken, in particular, in Portugal, and not in Brazil. These two varieties of Portuguese, for example, have a significant difference in phonetics that can be easily heard and recorded.

Message The International Criminal Court is a “useless and incompetent organization”

This thesis was spread on social networks, in particular on telegram channels that broadcast pro-Kremlin rhetoric. Reports say that now there is a decline of international institutions, because they are incompetent in their decisions. The reporters add that the International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Putin, but the organization is “not to be trusted”.

The experts of the EU vs Disinfo project investigated the case, they found out that the International Criminal Court is a permanent world court for war crimes. It was created under the Rome Statute, an agreement that all EU states have ratified. Russia signed the Rome Statute in 2000 but withdrew the statute in 2016 after the International Criminal Court ruled that Russia's annexation of Ukraine's Crimea was an armed conflict. That is, such an organization is quite legitimate and competent within its powers. According to the decision of the court, the countries that have signed and ratified the charter are subject to the decision of the judges. As of today, 123 states are parties to the Rome Statute.

Ukraine signed the Rome Statute, but did not ratify it. However, the Rome Statute provides for the possibility that, even without ratification, a state in certain cases may recognize the jurisdiction of the ICC. That is, according to the Statute, already now and in full, the International Criminal Court has the right to prosecute for crimes against humanity and war crimes committed by the occupiers on the territory of Ukraine.

Newspeak How Russia blurs reality with a newspeak: “terrorist act”

As of now, the international definition of a terrorist act includes actions that are criminal in nature and are committed under the influence or with the support of a terrorist group or state. Since Russia is officially recognized by some states as a terrorist state, its crimes against civilians in the framework of the war against Ukraine can be classified as terrorist attacks.

Propagandists refer to terrorist attacks as crimes in which the involvement of terrorist groups has not yet been clarified or confirmed. In fact, they call a terrorist attack by all means, which goes against the actions or statements of the Russian government. For example, in the Russian media, the murder of Dariia Duhina, the explosions on the Crimean bridge and the incident with Nord Stream 2 were called terrorist attacks.

Thus, Russian propaganda wants to make these events more dramatic and use them as an excuse to escalate the conflict. Moreover, often this happens not as a statement of fact, but as a call for this escalation. Like, it justifies the actions of Russia.

However, the most negative consequence of such abuse is that it devalues the notion of a terrorist attack and the tragedy of its victims and their families. On an international scale, terrorist attacks are crimes that have caused fear in a large number of calm and safe places, and the fight against terrorism is an urgent problem. However, by calling everything a terrorist attack, Russia distracts the world community from real problems.

Message The UN Security Council “doesn’t give a damn about suffering of Donbas inhabitants”

This thesis was spread on social networks, in particular on telegram channels that broadcast pro-Kremlin rhetoric. Reports say that the UN Security Council refused to allow a representative of the occupying authorities, the so-called “DNR ombudswoman” Daria Morozova to attend the meeting. Consequently, the authors began to disseminate the thesis that “the UN does not perceive the inhabitants of Donbas as people”, as well as “West does not give a damn about the suffering of the inhabitants of Donbas”. At the same time, the authors emphasize that the UN does not seem to want to hear “first-hand information about the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Donbas”.

The fact-checkers of the StopFake project drew attention to the case, they found out that the refusal of the UN Security Council to allow the so-called “DNR ombudswoman” to the meeting has nothing to do with “russophobia” or “the West’s refusal to learn about the problems” of residents in the Ukrainian territories temporarily occupied by Russia. On March 17, the UN Security Council voted against the participation in the meeting of a representative of the occupying authorities in Ukraine because of the illegitimacy of such a position. The “DNR ombudsman” is a fictitious position, as well as a fake political entity not recognized by many countries of the world. Analysts emphasize that representatives of the occupying authorities are trying to legitimize the Kremlin's “referenda” at gunpoint in the occupied Ukrainian territories.

It is Russia that is responsible for the humanitarian situation that has developed in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine in connection with Russian aggression. Ukraine is open to international investigative commissions and, unlike Russia, contributes in every possible way to the investigation of crimes committed during the war.

Fake Ukrainian territorial center for recruitment and social support “strongly recruit female chemists and biologists”

Such a message was circulated on social networks, in particular on telegram channels broadcasting pro-Kremlin rhetoric. Reports say that an increased mobilization of women has begun in Ukraine, first of all, women with a chemical or biological education are mobilized. The authors of the messages refer to the “results of intelligence” of the occupier. At the same time, the authors note that Ukraine is preparing to use chemical and biological weapons. It's a lie.

The experts of the StopFake project got down to the case, they investigated that in Ukraine they do not plan to carry out mandatory mobilization of women or the mobilization of women of certain specialties. According to the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Oleksii Reznikov, as of the end of 2022, 59,786 women served in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, of who: about 19 thousand are civilian workers (in the field of medicine, office work, communications, finance and administration), and the rest are military personnel. Also, about 5 thousand women are directly involved in hostilities. That is, everything happens of its own accord and there is no question of any “forced mobilization”.

At the same time, analysts called the thesis about the use of chemical or biological weapons false. Experts have not found any evidence of the likely use of chemical or biological weapons.

In October 2022, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a law on the voluntary procedure for taking women into military registration. According to the law, women who have received a medical or pharmaceutical specialty and are fit for age and health are subject to military registration. The rest can register voluntarily. Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine Hanna Maliar explained that there is no mobilization of women in the country. Until 2026, even Ukrainian women with a medical specialty do not have to be registered.

We recall that Detector Media previously also refuted fakes on the so-called mobilization of women. For example, the fake that women and children should allegedly prepare for mobilization.
