Spilnota Detector Media
Detector Media collects and documents real-time chronicles of the Kremlin disinformation about the Russian invasion. Ukraine for decades has been suffering from Kremlin disinformation. Here we document all narratives, messages, and tactics, which Russia is using from February 17th, 2022. Reminder: the increasing of shelling and fighting by militants happened on the 17th of February 2022 on the territory of Ukraine. Russian propaganda blames Ukraine for these actions.

On 16 September, on the 935th day of the full-scale war, our editorial office recorded:

Fake Volodymyr Zelenskyi owns a villa in Florida and earns $11 million monthly

Propagandists spread information on social networks that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi allegedly owns a villa in Florida (USA) worth $35 million, a total fortune of $1.2 billion, 15 houses, three private jets and $11 million of monthly income. It's fake.

Analysts of the CheckYourFact project drew attention to it. They could not find any confirmation of the data indicated by the propagandists. According to Forbes, Zelenskyi's total net worth as of April 2022 reached $20-30 million. There is no evidence of private jet ownership, and his real estate portfolio is valued at $4 million. Zelenskyi owned a $4.6 million villa in Italy but sold it in 2020. Forbes Ukraine and Presidential speaker Serhii Nikoforov, in comments to AFP Fact Check in March of this year, stated that the propagandists' information on this matter was not reliable.

Thus, propagandists want to discredit the President of Ukraine. Allegedly, the Ukrainians are fighting, and he earns in the war. Personal attacks against Zelenskyi often appear in Russian propaganda. In particular, Detector Media has repeatedly written about fake covers of various world publications, directed personally against the President.

Message American media lie about forcibly deported Ukrainian children to Russia

Propagandists argue that the American media and government institutions cannot call the evacuation of children from the “war zone” a process that violates international law. Like, Russia really cares about these children, and they left voluntarily. However, this is not true, and at least some evidence supports this.

Analysts of The Insider project drew attention to the message. They argue that there are no provisions in the Convention on the Rights of the Child that allow children to be taken to the territory of the occupying country in time of war. However, Russia at least violated Articles 9, 10, 11, 14, 21, 29 of the Convention. Russia not only took children to its territory without the consent of their parents/guardians/relatives and the authorities, but also re-educated them by force, forcing them to renounce their own cultural identity and values. This is evidenced by the statements of the Commissioner for Children's Rights of Russia Maria Lvovo-Bielova and the presence of a presidential grant in the Rostov region in the amount of about 3 million rubles for the project “Help to orphans of Donbas”. According to the description of the project, it was created to help Ukrainian children go through the “process of changing the Motherland”.

Thus, propagandists want to shift the responsibility for their crimes to others and devalue the scale of the tragedy. However, the testimonies of victims of deportation by force negate their attempts - in particular, the abducted children claimed that they were threatened with a boarding school, and the Russians told them that their parents had abandoned them. In addition, children say that they were beaten with metal sticks and told that they would forever remain “children of Russia”. Such actions are a violation of international law, as confirmed by the issuance of arrest warrants by the International Criminal Court against Volodymyr Putin and Maria Lvova-Bielova.

Manipulation Volodymyr Putin criticizes the United States in a recorded video

Anonymous accounts spreading pro-Russian rhetoric on social media are circulating videos of Russian President Volodymyr Putin allegedly criticizing the state of democracy in the United States. This is manipulation.

Fact-checkers from USA TODAY drew attention to it. They found out that the video was indeed created in 2020 using deepfake technology as part of an information campaign by the NGO RepresentUs to show the “fragility of democracy”. In it, Putin says that America accuses Russia of interfering in the elections, but it doesn't even have to do this, because American society is in a state of division. “Putin” adds that while Russia may use this for its own purposes, the Americans are deepening the rift themselves because “they don't know whom to trust”. A similar deepfake video was also created with North Korean leader Kim Jong-in.

Thus, propagandists want to shift the responsibility for their problems onto others. Like, everyone criticizes Russia, but America is no better, and even worse than Russia. This is not the first time Russians have shaped well-intentioned material to fit their worldview. Propagandists often take quotes from media figures out of context, in particular, statements by French President Macron about the future of Russia.

Newspeak How Russia blurs reality with the newspeak: “сombat actions”

Russian propagandists continue to circumvent responsibility by choosing different language to define the war that Russia unleashed in Ukraine. Very often, the use of official language can cause not only fatigue, but also doubts about the actions of the Russian military. Therefore, a more informal construction is “combat actions”.

The war between Russia and Ukraine has been going on for the ninth year. It is clear that most of it takes place on the battlefield, which is the combat actions. However, “combat actions” have a clear definition - war.

Using this phrase, Russia is trying to show that the war against Ukraine is a temporary phenomenon and allegedly creates additional problems for the Russians. The vague language is also being used to play along with the “blitzkrieg” message the Russian government promised its citizens in the event of an offensive into Ukraine. Additionally, with this phrase, Russian propaganda is again trying to shift the responsibility for the crimes of the aggressor onto the victim of aggression.

Manipulation In Ukraine, men will be banned from entering universities

Telegram channels spreading pro-Russian rhetoric report that in Ukraine they want to ban men from entering universities. They say that martial law limits the constitutional rights of Ukrainians, including education, and to implement this idea, they are already preparing an appropriate legislative framework. This is manipulation.

Analysts of the NotaYenota project drew attention to it. They found that such decisions require changes to the Constitution, which is prohibited under martial law. Lawyers note that even if it is theoretically possible to make the necessary changes to the laws “On mobilization” and “On education”, this will cause outrage among society and Western partners. In addition, such decisions may be challenged by the Constitutional Court of Ukraine.

Thus, propagandists want to discredit the Ukrainian authorities and create a sense of panic among the population, creating the illusion of losing. They say that Ukraine cannot cope with defense, therefore it is ready to mobilize everyone, neglecting constitutional rights. However, it is Russia that solves its own problems with mobilization, despite the rights of its citizens, as evidenced by the recent initiative with “electronic agendas”.

Fake In Ukraine, visiting the graves of soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine became paid

Russian news resources disseminate information that visiting the graves of soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is paid in Ukraine. They claim that in Drohobych in the Lviv region they are not allowed to go to the cemetery without making an advance payment. Like, in this way Ukraine wants to hide the real number of dead. It's fake.

Analysts of the StopFake project drew attention to it. They found out that the fake appeared on the basis of one video that was distributed on social networks. On it, the relatives of the deceased soldier want to visit the cemetery and refuse to pay, to which the watchman replies that he can only let the military into the territory. This video was picked up by Russian propaganda.

In response to public outrage, the Drohobych city council published an explanation of the situation. In particular, city officials claim that tolls were introduced to the city cemetery years before the full-scale invasion to curb excessive traffic and maintain order in the area. Funds from the collections are used to improve the general condition of the cemetery.

Thus, Russia wants to discredit the Ukrainian authorities and cause mistrust among the Ukrainian society. They say that the “Kyiv regime” does not honor its heroes at all. However, the neglect of military personnel is a Russian problem, as evidenced, in particular, by the widespread practice of anonymous and secret burials among the Russian Armed Forces.
