Spilnota Detector Media

Here we document all narratives, messages, and tactics, which Russia is using from February 17th, 2022. Reminder: the increasing of shelling and fighting by militants happened on the 17th of February 2022 on the territory of Ukraine. Russian propaganda blames Ukraine for these actions.

Fake Russia liquidated Ukrainian commanders

Kremlin propaganda media and anonymous telegrams are spreading the information that the Russian military has liquidated Ukrainian commanders. It is not true.

This information was refuted by Deputy Defense Minister Anna Maliar. On her telegram, she wrote that “everyone is alive” and noted that during the week there were three messages about the liquidation of Ukrainian commanders.

Thus, Russian propaganda is trying to sow panic among Ukrainians. Like, they are destroying the military leadership, so soon there will be no one to defend Ukraine. The propagandists also hope to demoralize the Ukrainian military and raise the spirit of the Russians. Earlier, Detector Media denied a fake that Major General Volodymyr Oliynyk, commander of the territorial defense units, was allegedly killed in Kyiv.

Fake A French studio released an animated series about Zelenskyi trying to escape with the partners’ money

The third episode of the Ukraine Inc. cartoon series about Volodymyr Zelenskyi was released by an allegedly French animation studio. The authors write that the cartoon shows the “strict everyday life” of Ukraine, and Zelenskyi sends the Ukrainians to the “meat grinder”. In the third episode, the president of Ukraine changes his face to ask for money from partners, and at the end of the series he tries to escape with this money. It's fake.

According to specialists from the Center for Countering Disinformation, it is impossible to find a mention of the French studio on the Internet, and news about the series is spread by the Kremlin propaganda media. Therefore, it follows from this that the Russians themselves created the animated series.

Russian propaganda uses ridicule tactics to create the illusion that the President of Ukraine is despised in Europe. Thus, propagandists are trying to manipulate the feelings of Ukrainians. Earlier, Detector Media talked about the first episode of the Ukraine Inc. cartoon, which says that Zelenskyi, at the request of the West, launches a “military meat grinder”, meaning that he is escorting Ukrainians to death.

Manipulation US general says Russia is defeating Ukraine in war

Such information is disseminated by the Kremlin propaganda media. They refer to the statement of the chief US general in Europe, Christopher Cavoli, which he allegedly made on the air of the American TV channel TruNews. According to propagandists, Cavoli said that the Russian military allegedly “has not been affected negatively” in the war, and Western media seemed to distort information about the “degradation” of Russian troops. This is manipulation.

According to the fact-checkers of the VoxCheck project, Christopher Cavoli did not talk about the advantage of the Russians in the war and that the Western media distort the facts, moreover, he emphasized that Ukraine is in a good position. Russian propaganda took out of context a quote where the general spoke about the activity of the Russians in the Atlantic Ocean and that it was precisely that part of the Russian military that the war had almost no effect on. “Russians are more active than we’ve seen them in years, and their patrols into the Atlantic, and throughout the Atlantic, are at a high level, most of the time at a higher level than we’ve seen in years”, Cavoli said exclusively about the Russian military in the Atlantic Ocean.

Russian propaganda also said that the general spoke on the TruNews TV channel, but took out of context a quote from his speech to the House Committee. The Media Bias/Fact Check project, which aggregates the assessments of independent IFCN fact-checkers, writes that TruNews is a conspiracy and pseudo-scientific publication that spreads conspiracy theories and hate speech and is an unreliable source of information. VoxCheck noticed that TruNews was spreading pro-Kremlin narratives.

Russian propaganda systematically distorts interviews with foreign experts in order to discredit them. Thus, propagandists are trying to convince Ukrainians that the event does not support our country in the war and sow discouragement among society. Earlier, Detector Media refuted the fake that American General Mark Milli allegedly accidentally praised Russia for “successes” in the beginning of a “special military operation”.

Manipulation Crime rate rises in Eastern Europe due to Ukraine

This information was disseminated by the Russian propaganda media. In his articles, propaganda media writes that columnist Xavier Rofé, in an article for the Atlantico, stated that “the growth of crime has intensified, as drugs and weapons are illegally smuggled there from Ukraine”. Propagandists also note that Xavier Rofé allegedly warned last autumn about the growth of crime in the Carpathian mountain range, stretching from Poland to Romania, which is why the number of illegal migrants in Europe is growing. This is manipulation.

As the fact-checkers of the Stop Fake project note, the original publication on the Atlantico website does not talk about the fact that because of Ukraine the crime rate is growing in Eastern Europe. Xavier Rofé explains that because of the war, the Odesa criminal network was blocked and therefore the illegal circulation moved to the Carpathians. He writes that official reports mention the action of “Polish, Czech, Romanian and Slovak authorities - the southern side of the Carpathian arc”. He also recalls Russian companies that can operate in this zone and be involved in criminal schemes.

The reason for the increase in the level of crime, according to criminologist Xavier Rofé, is the war in Ukraine unleashed by Russia. This material does not contain actual evidence, and its purpose is to warn officials in Europe about the possible danger of all countries.

Thus, Russian propagandists are trying to discredit Ukraine in the eyes of foreigners, to present Ukrainians as criminals in order to reduce support for our country. Earlier, Detector Media told about the manipulation, that allegedly because of Ukrainian refugees, the number of thefts in Polish stores increased by a third.

Fake Georgian Legion fighting in Ukraine filmed a video with threats of murder and rape

The video was circulated in Russian propaganda media. It shows three masked men with Georgian Legion chevrons fighting in Ukraine addressing  “Russian pigs” and promising to dance on their graves, as well as threatening residents of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali, including women and children, with rape. It's fake.

The fact-checkers of the Myth Detector project drew attention to the case. In the video, the faces of the soldiers are covered, so it is impossible to identify them. Also, the commander of the Georgian Legion, Mamuka Mamulashvili, made a statement on Facebook that “this is another Russian provocation aimed at discrediting the Georgian Legion fighting in Ukraine”. The persons depicted in the video are not related to the Georgian Legion.

Analysts also note that the person in the video pronounces Georgian words incorrectly and violates morphology: instead of “ruso gorebo” (Russian pigs), the masked man says “Rusi gorebo”, and instead of “ukrainuly sheteva” (Ukrainian attack) on the video one can hear “Ukrainskuli sheteva”. Therefore, the Georgian language is not native for the man in the mask.

Thus, Russian propaganda is trying to discredit the Georgian Legion that is fighting in Ukraine and spread the opinion that criminals and murderers are fighting in the International Legion. Earlier, Detector Media denied the fake that all foreigners fighting in Ukraine are mercenaries.
