Spilnota Detector Media
Detector Media collects and documents real-time chronicles of the Kremlin disinformation about the Russian invasion. Ukraine for decades has been suffering from Kremlin disinformation. Here we document all narratives, messages, and tactics, which Russia is using from February 17th, 2022. Reminder: the increasing of shelling and fighting by militants happened on the 17th of February 2022 on the territory of Ukraine. Russian propaganda blames Ukraine for these actions.

Fake Ukraine uses “live demining” tactics with its own fighters to overcome Russian defenses

Russian media broadcasting pro-Kremlin rhetoric are disseminating information that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are allegedly using “live mine clearance” tactics with their own fighters in an attempt to overcome Russian defenses. It's fake.

The case was studied by analysts of the EUvsDiDiNFo project. They found that there was no evidence to support Ukraine using these tactics. In fact, the opposite is true: according to many sources, the Ukrainian counteroffensive was slowed down by mined fields precisely because the Ukrainian military wants to prevent massive casualties.

Russian propaganda uses reflexive tactics to prevent reports that in Bakhmut the Russian command is throwing the Russians into desperate actions and sparing no manpower. Also, Russian propagandists are trying to discredit the military command of Ukraine, saying that they do not value the lives of their servicemen. Earlier, Detector Media talked about manipulation, allegedly the chief of staff of the Azov brigade said that the Ukrainian counteroffensive was very publicized, and Russia was invincible.

Fake In the winter of 2023, Germany transferred 200 mobile crematoria to Ukraine

Pro-Kremlin telegram channels are disseminating information that in January and February 2023, Germany allegedly transferred 200 mobile crematoria to Ukraine due to heavy losses at the front. It's fake.

The case was investigated by the fact-checker of the VoxCheck project. The website of the Federal Government of Germany records all the assistance provided, but there is no information about the transfer of mobile crematoria to Ukraine.

Moreover, the Oryx website, which collects data based on open sources, also does not have information on this delivery.

Thus, Russian propaganda is trying to sow panic and despondency among Ukrainians, saying that there are large losses in the Ukrainian army. Previously, we refuted the fake news that Ukrainian territorial defense brigades were creating mobile crematoria.

Manipulation The chief of staff of the Azov brigade said that the Ukrainian counteroffensive is very publicized, and Russia is invincible

Anonymous telegram channels broadcasting pro-Kremlin rhetoric are disseminating information that the chief of staff of the Azov brigade, Bohdan “Tavr” Krotevych, allegedly said in an interview that the Ukrainian counteroffensive was greatly promoted, and Russia has never lost in wars. This is manipulation.

As fact-checkers of the VoxCheck project noted, Bogdan Krotevich spoke in an interview about the strong PR of the Ukrainian counteroffensive, but this was in the context of predicting the end of the war - no one can predict this. However, he did not say that Russia never lost wars. Krotevych noted that it has not yet been destroyed. He also added that there is no scenario where Ukraine will lose. Propagandists manipulated, taking words out of context and distorting them.

Thus, Russian propaganda is trying to discredit the Ukrainian military and spreading the message that no one even believes in the victory of Ukraine, not even the military who defend it. Previously, we refuted the fake that Joe Biden admitted that Putin cannot be defeated.

Fake NATO is preparing for the defeat of Ukraine and the occupation of the western part of Ukrainian territories

Russian media, broadcasting pro-Kremlin rhetoric, are disseminating information that the future NATO exercises Steadfast-Defender-2024 are allegedly directed against Russia. They are also preparing for the “loss of Ukraine” and are working on a “plan for the occupation” of the western part of Ukrainian territories. Like, “when Russian troops approach Dnipro, (...) a peacekeeping operation will begin. Poland is part of Western Ukraine, it has two or three regions there plus Romania”, said the Russian propagandist, cited by Russian media. It's fake.

The case was investigated by the fact-checker of the StopFake project. Romania and Poland have repeatedly denied statements by Russian propagandists regarding the occupation of Western Ukraine. NATO regularly conducts Steadfast-Defender exercises, which practice defending European countries rather than attacking others.

Thus, Russian propaganda is trying to discredit the Alliance and sow panic among Ukrainian society, saying that European countries are trying to seize the territory of Ukraine. However, neither state has territorial ambitions. Russia is an invader and, using reflexive tactics, tries to accuse other countries of what Russia is accused of. Earlier, Detector Media refuted the fake that Poland and Lithuania approved a plan to annex the western part of Ukraine.

Fake The military command of Ukraine created a petition for the dissolution of the Verkhovna Rada and the mobilization of deputies

The social network TikTok is distributing a video in which the military command of Ukraine, in particular Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Oleksandr Syrskyi, Serhii Shaptala, Dmytro Marchenko  allegedly created a petition for the dissolution of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the subsequent mobilization of deputies. The video also features Vitalii Kim, the head of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration. Social network users are encouraged to follow the link and sign the petition. It's fake.

The case was examined by fact-checkers from the Center for Countering Disinformation. In fact, such a petition does not exist, the video is fake, and the link to the petition leads to various telegram channels and third-party sites.

Thus, Russian propaganda is trying to discredit the military command of Ukraine and promoting the message that there is a conflict between it and the leadership of the state. Previously, we talked about a message that allegedly Zaluzhnyi “was asked to reduce the level of his publicity due to the conflict with Zelenskyi”.

Newspeak How Russia blurs reality with a newspeak: Moldovan language

Issues of linguistic identification were actively used by the Soviet government to divide peoples and deepen political divisions. An example of this is the introduction of the Moldovan language during the USSR.

Moldovan language is a Romanian variation written in Cyrillic. Linguists claim that the literary version of both languages is identical, and the only difference is in the alphabet. The Moldovan language is still a subject of political controversy in Moldova and a litmus test for determining who is supported by Russia or who supports Russia. Soviet authorities created the Moldovan language to disconnect Moldova from Romanian influence. In the current conditions, the Cyrillic alphabet is used in Transnistria, and pro-Russian politicians actively opposed the recent decision to change the wording “state” and “Moldovan language” to “Romanian language”.

Pro-Western forces actively advocated opposition to the Moldavian language, since they considered it a Soviet vestige. Propagandists condemned them and tried to show this as a “desecration” of Moldovan history, as in the case of the name of the country. In particular, they cited erroneous analogies with the situation in Ukraine. They say that Moldova faces a bad future, because in Ukraine they are also dividing people by the issue of language. However, in fact, Russia has created an artificial construct that divides people into “right” and “wrong”. Using this term, they further want to deepen the split in Moldovan society and destabilize the internal political situation in the country for the sake of imperial ambitions.
