Spilnota Detector Media
Detector Media collects and documents real-time chronicles of the Kremlin disinformation about the Russian invasion. Ukraine for decades has been suffering from Kremlin disinformation. Here we document all narratives, messages, and tactics, which Russia is using from February 17th, 2022. Reminder: the increasing of shelling and fighting by militants happened on the 17th of February 2022 on the territory of Ukraine. Russian propaganda blames Ukraine for these actions.

Message To manipulate and intimidate their partners, Ukrainian leadership turns on air raid alerts

This thesis was circulated on social networks, in particular on telegram channels broadcasting pro-Kremlin rhetoric. The report says that during the visits of foreign officials, air raid sirens are activated by order of Volodymyr Zelenskyi. Like, this will convince partners to supply weapons to Ukraine, because this is a frightening experience. The authors of the reports cite an example when on February 16, Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen met with his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba. The authors claim that Ukraine specifically turned on the air raid alert in Kyiv then. The publication also adds a photo of both ministers and the inscription: “The head of the Israeli Foreign Ministry could not be persuaded to supply weapons even after the air raid sirens were turned on”.

This thesis has no confirmation, since the air raid signal is activated with each new threat to the airspace of Ukraine. On February 16, according to the alert map, 70 air raid signals were announced throughout Ukraine, two in Kyiv including. The Ukrainian leadership does not turn on the air raid alert intentionally. The whole process of turning on a signal does not depend on only one person, but is carried out by a number of specialists.

Propagandists spread this message to create the appearance that Ukraine is doing everything possible to beg for weapons from Western partners. Like, the Ukrainian government resorts to deception and “tricks”.

We recall that Detector Media has already explained the message in which Zelenskyi allegedly does not turn on the air raid sirens so as not to frighten the Ukrainians.

Message Ukraine seeks to destroy ethnic Hungarians, therefore recruits them into the army en masse

This thesis was circulated on social networks, in particular on telegram channels broadcasting pro-Kremlin rhetoric. The report says that Ukraine is allegedly engaged in ethnic cleansing of Hungarians in Transcarpathia, that is, genocide. They say that Ukraine sends ethnic Hungarians to the front, and does not “touch” others. The authors of the messages add that, at the same time, the Ukrainian leadership wants to get rid of ethnic Hungarians in the territory of Transcarpathia to the detriment of Hungary.

Analysts of the EU vs Disinfo project investigated this case and found that no facts confirm that representatives of national minorities in Ukraine, in particular Hungarians, are disproportionately called up to the Ukrainian army. A citizen of Ukraine liable for military service can carry it out on an equal basis with everyone, regardless of whether such a person belongs to the category of national minorities or not. In addition, the Hungarian authorities did not make any official statements about the so-called genocide of the Hungarians in Transcarpathia or “ethnic cleansing”.

This message is beneficial for propaganda, as the authors want to nourish the narrative that Ukraine itself is allegedly engaged in genocide. Thus, propagandists want to hide their own war crimes, the murder and genocide of Ukrainians, and at the same time whitewash themselves.

"Detector Media" previously denied the fake that Russia would transfer the alleged Transcarpathian prisoners of war to Hungary in order to achieve justice.

Tactics and tools How Russian propaganda uses repetition tactics

Multiple repetition is one of the key tactics of Russian propaganda. The idea (thesis, slogan) is repeated many times in different sources of information until it is perceived as true. Television, radio, cinema, show business, literature, education, etc. are used to spread the idea.

For example, in 2014, after the occupation of the Crimean peninsula, Russians began to use the slogan “Crimea is ours!”. It sounded everywhere: in the official statements of Russian officials, in the media, in the statements of famous Russians, in humorous programs, etc. To reinforce the idea, Russian propagandist Andrii Kondrashov shot a documentary film for several hours - a reconstruction of the events of “Crimea. Way to the motherland” (meaning “return” to Russia). Due to the multiple repetition of the slogan in the form of a hashtag for social networks, a new version of its spelling appeared - “Krymnash” (Crimea is ours). In the Russian-language version of Wikipedia, such a transformation is called the “neologism of the Russian language”, which was allegedly recognized as the “word of the year”. The idea was endlessly repeated to the Russians that the temporarily occupied Crimea supposedly belongs to Russia. That is why they perceive it as true, despite the fact that not a single democratic state in the world has recognized the accession of the peninsula to Russia.

Another example of multiple repetition is the spread of the Russian narrative “Nazis/fascists came to power in Ukraine – Ukrainians need to be saved”. Since 2013, since the beginning of the Revolution of Dignity, Russian propaganda began to call the democratic processes in Ukraine a “coup d'état”, a “seizure of power”, power - a “junta”, a “Kyiv regime”. Also, messages about Ukrainian “nationalists”, “Nazis”, “Banderas” began to be promoted in the information space. That is, the propagandists combined the tactics of substitution of concepts with multiple repetition and fixed far-fetched messages as truthful. Finally, the narrative about the need to “liberate” Ukrainians from “Nazis/fascists” was used to justify the start of the so-called “special military operation”.

Fake Russia seeks to become a “safe haven” for all people

This thesis was circulated on social networks, in particular on telegram channels broadcasting pro-Kremlin rhetoric. The report says that Russia's main task is to become a safe haven for “normal people”. With all its actions, the Russian leadership only wants to show that their country is “an island of common sense in this crazy world”.

However, this rhetoric masks the true face of the terrorist country. Saying that Russia wants to protect all the people of the world, it has committed and is committing war crimes. In particular, on the territory of Ukraine, since the beginning of the war in 2014, Russia has been causing devastation: destroying Ukrainian cities and villages, killing thousands of Ukrainians, in particular children. At the same time, propagandists are building an imaginary curtain between the whole world and Russia, saying that there are enemies on the other side. Consequently, they instill hatred in Russians for almost all peoples.

Thus, the authors of the messages justify the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine and promote the narrative that Ukraine needs protection and assistance from Russia. As if Russia is ready to help Ukraine and lend its hand.

We recall that in our new section “Newspeak” we talked about how Russia substitutes the concept and calls the “occupation of foreign territories” “liberation”.

Fake Ukrainians ask Putin to “regain their common sense”

Such a fake was spread on social networks, including the Georgian segment of Facebook. The report says that a rally was held in Poland, where Ukrainians asked Putin for help. The authors of the message add to the publication a photo where people are holding a poster with the inscription: “Putin, give us back common sense”. It is not true.

Analysts of the Myth Detector project investigated this case and found that the photo was taken using a graphic editor, the inscription was superimposed on the original photo. The real photo was taken in Warsaw during the Euromaidan protests in Ukraine in 2014. The rally was organized by the public movement “Euromaidan” in Warsaw. The participants went to the Embassy of Ukraine in Warsaw and honored the memory of those who died during the events of the Revolution of Dignity. Deputies of the Polish Seimas, in particular, joined the action.

The real photos show posters with the following slogans: “Support of the Poles’ hearts is the result of the Ukrainians’s gratitude” and “Let us unite in the fight against the aggression of a common enemy - Putin”.

Fake Ukrainian underage boys are not allowed to go abroad because they will soon be mobilized

Such a fake was spread on social networks, in particular in telegram channels broadcasting pro-Russian rhetoric. Reports say that Ukrainian children are not allowed out of Ukraine, in particular, underage boys. The authors of the messages add that this is how the Ukrainian authorities prepare children for mobilization, because the war will be long-term - until the last Ukrainian. As evidence, the authors refer to another telegram channel of the Ukrainian segment, in which Ukrainians allegedly complain that their young children are not allowed through the checkpoint, and customs officials deny any explanation. It is not true.

Analysts of the VoxCheck project drew attention to this case and determined that in fact children are released from Ukraine abroad, they are not subject to mobilization. At the same time, the telegram channel quoted by the propagandists does not exist at all. Fact-checkers are convinced that the screenshot was taken using a graphics editor.

The fake screenshot shows the so-called channel messages, for example: “My daughter and I were let through, our son is gone”. Analysts say that “... our son is gone” is an automatic translation from the Russian phrase “There is no son” (that is, they did not let the son go). In Ukrainian, this phrase should have sounded “My daughter and I were let through, but our son was not”.

By spreading this fake, the propagandists are once again promoting the message of total mobilization in Ukraine. Like, there is no one to fight, so even minors are mobilized. At the same time, they are promoting the previously widespread thesis about “war against the last Ukrainian”, which confirms the alleged indifference of the Ukrainian authorities and the so-called Western curators to the Ukrainian people.
