Fake: Canada has allegedly introduced “special euthanasia” for Ukrainian refugees
Kremlin Telegram channels and social media users are spreading fake information claiming that Canada has passed a law providing free euthanasia “specifically” for Ukrainian refugees. Analysts from the StopFake project drew attention to this.
These posts do not cite any sources or mention the date such a “law” was allegedly adopted. With irony, users comment “two for the price of one” or “Canada has chosen an unusual way to support Ukraine”, further spreading this disinformation.
Canada does indeed have the Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) program, which allows voluntary death under specific medical conditions. However, only Canadian citizens or permanent residents who are of legal age, have an incurable illness, and meet other strict criteria are eligible. Such individuals must also have full access to Canada’s public health care system.
Ukrainian refugees, by contrast, usually receive limited medical coverage through the Interim Federal Health Program, which does not include access to MAiD.
The claim about a “special law” for Ukrainian refugees is a propaganda fabrication. There are no mentions of any laws or amendments related to Ukrainian refugees on the official Government of Canada website, where all changes to the MAiD program are published. Section 241.2 of Canada’s Criminal Code, which regulates euthanasia, has also remained unchanged.
Such fabrications are intended to incite fear, distrust, and hostility among Ukrainians living abroad, as well as among the population of Russia.
